A game of poker involves players placing a bet before the dealer deals out cards. The player with the highest ranking hand wins the pot. Players can also discard their cards & take new ones from the deck. Poker is almost always played with chips. Each chip has a value & color. A white chip is worth the minimum ante, a red chip is worth five whites, & a blue or dark colored chip is usually worth 10 or 25 white chips. A player must have at least 200 chips to play the game.

One of the biggest mistakes that many new players make is trying to put an opponent on a hand. It is very hard to put an opponent on a hand, especially in early position. Instead, try to work out the range of hands your opponent could have & bet accordingly.
It is important to be disciplined & stick to your plan even when it gets boring or frustrating. You will probably lose many hands, especially in the beginning, but if you stay consistent & follow your plan, the long-term results should be positive.

There are three emotions that can kill your poker game: defiance, hope & avarice. Defiance is the tendency to hold on to a weak hand in the hopes that it will improve. Hope is the desire to call a bet when you shouldn’t. Lastly, avarice is the desire to get more than your share of the pot.
The next phase of the poker game is the flop. The dealer will then deal three more cards face up on the table that everyone can use. Then there is a second betting round. During this round you should bet aggressively with strong hands & fold weak ones. Also be sure to check the strength of your opponent’s hand before calling a bet. It is not uncommon for players to bluff when they have a strong hand, so don’t be afraid to call their bluffs!
